store bought hair dyes would not damage your hair if you follow closely it's instructions and truly performed the reactions test however, these dyes would come in single color only, prompting you to buy some more boxes if you opt for highlights and such, not to mention the tools you need to get it done. where as, in a salon, you just have to pick the color and sit and wait. much more convenient in a salon.
