Use a mega hold hair gel on damp hair. Use a set of tiny hot rollers on dry hair--- approx. 1/2" in diameter. Take small sections of hair (1/2") and wrap them in spiral around the roller from top to bottom. Wait until the rollers are completely cold before removing. Unroll slowly to maintain the shape of the curl. The curls will hold longer with a light spritz of non-sticky hairspray before you separate the strands. After spray sets, carefully separate the curls with your fingers.

If hot rollers are not your thing, take the 1/2" sections of hair while still damp (still using hair gel) and coil them to your scalp. Use a clip or bobby pin to hold each coil. When hair is dry, remove pins and follow the same procedure as above.

Get layers cut into your hair for more volume.

Put a special salt solution into your hair that gives it more grip, I can't remember the name I'm afraid (ask your hairdresser for this)

Use a very small barrelled curler, as a large barrel just isn't going to work.

I'm afraid to keep the look you're going to have to use some hairspray. But it doesn't have to be sticky and heavy - use Elnett (I swear by it I've used it throughout my life), it's perfect and comes out with the stroke of a brush if you're not happy with it.

use a curl activator. they have some you use when you wash your hair and they have some you use when your hair is not wet.

i have the same type of hair girl. its all abut the product that you put in first. im a hairdresser so i have access to a lot of different types of products. and my fav out of all them is johnathan product, and garnier fructis, you know the green stuff. you can actually get it at wal mart or something. get something called hair wear. its in a small green tub. i thnk its like four bucks. but, if you cant get anything, just use a good mousse before you curl, and then a good holding spray at he end. the trick to having your hair hold is how you curl it itself. let me see if i can explain this.. lol take small three inch portions of your hair, put the curling iron (not the big sizes, we need a smaller size cause our hair wont hold it) ..put the iron int he middle of the hair portion... then roll up to the top, you should have some hair sticking out from the bottom. hold it for about twenty sec, and then push the release button, which should release the hair sticking out, and now get rolled into the rest of he hair portion you are curling. roll all the way to the top, and then hold for thirty sec. see the top is thicker and needs to be hotter, if the top curl holds the bottom will most likely as well.

sorry this is the best i could explain.
